Raveen is a young 6th former at Beckfoot School. She is very community minded and is involved in many activities and organisations in Heaton. She supports, promotes and has been involved in community life at all levels. As a volunteer helper she works on a Sunday and Thursday. Here she uses her IT skills and helps with library activities. This summer it was the reading challenge on the theme of space. She supports children with their reading, learning, writing and social skills, suggesting ideas for activities and promoting the library to children and adults. It was her idea to take our library group for a trip in the summer holidays. The children involved had also worked very hard at their reading challenge. She was adamant that we could do the trip and suggested we went to Bingley St Ives, as some of our regulars had never been despite it not being very far away. She planned and checked everything herself; booked the minibus taxi, prepared and carried the picnic meal and organised an adventure walk around the lake, bird hide, farm and woodland. She worked everything out to suit a budget so that all could attend. An action typical of Raveen was to suggest taking with us a child whose parent couldn’t come, taking responsibility for her and enabling her to have a great time.
After beating ovarian cancer two years ago Tabby age 15 decided to raise money for the ward that saved her life and another cancer charity. She organised and cycled with her brother and dad from Charing Cross in London (where her specialist oncologist is) to Leeds (who monitor her). By the cycle ride and other fundraising eg bake sales she has raised more than £22,000 this year for the LGI teen cancer ward and the Willberry cancer charity.
